Discussions what I wish was offered in open source en>fr fr>en By qazwiz Comments: 30, member since Mon Aug 07, 2006On Tue Aug 15, 2006 12:46 AM
This category is not really looking for your wish-list but rather is trying to find programs to fit your needs.
entries should be for one type of program and list the things you want it to do for you.
you should also include your operating system. if you don't know what your operating system is (and there are some that don't) then turn off your computer and then turn it back on. it should tell you in the screens that come up. (mine has two screens, one says Gateway, and the other says Windows XP. so one of them has got to be my operating system )
I'll warn you right now, I do not believe that there is any type of program that isn't represented by some open source entry. That means I believe I can find a free program to do anything. (that a computer CAN do )
but it may not be ported to all systems yet (meaning yours) but there are a lot of people out there who do take open source files and port them to other systems... and windows is getting more and more ports of late, so be of good cheer and try to find that killer app for your needs in the open source community
So come on, I DARE you to find something that you cannor find in an open source program! 8 Replies to what I wish was offered in open source |

Looking for a program like dreamweaver this one is good though I belive its probally abit more like Microsoft Frontpage than Dreamweaver myself but take a look anyway. Not sure if it does cfm and php (honestly not quite sure what they are) I mostly use it for doing friends webpages and stuff so yeah.

Let's get back to the progs you want!!! en>fr fr>en By qazwiz Comments: 30, member since Mon Aug 07, 2006On Fri Mar 30, 2007 02:27 PM
Sorry I lost my Internet for a while but I see someone already mentioned the prog: Nvu
it allows you to make a folder hierarchy of pages for the web and then after you get it working on your computer, it allows you to ftp it to your web server.... just make sure whatever host you hire (I don't suggest a free host as they tend to be very limited in scope, some allow as few as five web pages) just be sure the host allows straight ftp of sites (ftp the folder and contents and you move the entire web site)
ALSO
since this is a forum on OpenCD.org, you should already have a copy of Nvu as it it included on the 3.1 version of the OpenCD and likely will be included in all versions after it also |

you ask for Garage Band, I assume this is a multi track midi and synthesizer able prog like cakewalk "Music Maker"
the Linux open source equivalent is called RoseGarden
unfortunately as of the last time I checked (A year ago) it had not yet been ported to windows... there isn't much request since there is such an active Linux community supporting RoseGarden.
if you are into making your own music I would suggest you look for a release of Linux geared for the Audiophiles (also check out the Video release for making your music videos, i believe it also has RoseGarden)
NOTE: that "active community" is hundreds (if not thousands) of musicians, like yourself, but who already have set up a Linux system to make their beautiful music.... this translated in fast answers to questions like "How do I get started?", "What is the best hardware on a budget?", and "You plug what, where?" |

www.theopencd.org
With that link (it is a DOT org address if you cannot just click it)
You will go to the front page of the download site and on the right is the link to the current download... there you will find both direct download and torrent files.
If you have a 24/7 connection PLEASE dl the torrent and seed to at least 200% (double what you receive)
YES, the straight download CAN be faster... but if everyone that uses the straight dl were to go p2p and seed constantly... the torrent would always get faster with each new download until it would max out everyones dl speed
